Let’s start building your own CV for construction project manager positions.

1. Get The Tools Out: Construction Project Manager CV Format

Try building a project without the plans and a level. In a profession where you have to juggle so many responsibilities, different talents, and pay the utmost attention to every detail, you can’t afford to have your construction project manager CV looking sloppy.

It should follow a clear blueprint.

This is what you should comply with:

Construction Project Manager CV Format

  • Order your CV sections accordingly: Header, Objective/Summary, Experience, Education, and “Additional.”

Now that you’ve seen the blueprint, let’s start mixing the cement.

2. Write a High-Rise Construction Management CV Objective or Summary

When you juggle as many responsibilities as a CPM, you’re going to be able to fill your construction projection CV with text. The trick is to pick the best, most relevant tidbits.

Focus your CV profile (the short paragraph at the top of your CV) on your experience that fits the profile of the new company, and build a targeted CV.

Try to provide as many metrics and numbers as possible: number of projects, number of units built to completion, value, savings. These things will make you stand out. If you have years of professional experience, write a career summary. See the examples:

Construction Project Manager CV Summary

Good Example
A cost-saving construction project manager with 5+ years of experience in residential building projects. Managed the annual budget of £15 million in 2019, saving 8% from the projected costs. Managed 3 large-scale projects to completion in 2019, totaling 189 separate housing units with a market value of £26 million. Implemented new safety and way of working instructions on sites, reducing the rate of accidents by 40%. Certified as a CCM, PMP, AC, CPC and a LEED Green Associate.
Bad Example
I am a construction project manager with 5 years of experience at Trump Organisation where I managed projects ranging from conversions to ground up construction. Developed, reviewed and approved contract documents, selected contractors to be awarded contracts, oversaw construction, developed building, supply, and delivery schedules, managed budgets, coordinated with clients and their sales teams.

These two examples could be the same person. There is no use running off a list of generic responsibilities. Tell them how well you took care of those duties. List numbers and metrics—quantifying your impact makes it easier for them to picture you in their company.

If you are applying from a lower level of the hierarchy, you may opt for a career objective.Focus on experience you have that is also within the scope of a construction project manager. Show how you excelled to demonstrate that you are ready for the new role and responsibilities.

Construction Project Manager CV Objective

Good Example
A meticulous construction manager with 3+ years of experience as an assistant at GHR Construction, where I assisted the manager on projects ranging from £1m to £35m. Commended by senior management for being able to perform my duties independently on several occasions. Certified as a CCM, PMP, AC, CPC and a LEED Green Associate. Seeking to leverage this experience to deliver projects on time and budget at PPT Construction.
Bad Example
Experienced assistant construction manager seeking to be given a chance as a construction project manager. Have extensive experience on building projects, on occasions taking over for the main manager. Fully certified.

Here’s how to spruce up your construction project manager CV objective:

  • Use strong, relevant power adjectives like efficient, cost-saving
  • If you are a CCM with the CMAA, refer to yourself as that: a Certified Construction Manager.
  • List your years of experience in the industry as a whole.
  • Show clearly, quantifiably, how you will make an impact for your new employer.
  • Back up whatever you can with achievements and numbers.

Expert Hint: A study by L. Zhang and W. Fan has found a correlation between emotional intelligence and construction project performance. High expressions of certain emotional intelligence factors can realistically impact performance even in projects of a large and complex scale, however, the effects of self-confidence and teamwork were not confirmed. Bolster your construction project manager CV with some soft EI skills, and explain how they can impact the projects.

3. Build Up Your Construction Project Manager CV Job Description

This part of the CV doesn’t exist to demonstrate if you know the responsibilities of a construction project manager. It exists to demonstrate just how much better than everyone else you can fulfil them.

Try to quantify the effect of every action you describe in your construction project manager job description. Think numbers, achievements and improvements: number of developments completed, budgets managed, savings made, improvements made.

Good Example

Construction Project Manager

Smith & Kelly

2015–2019

  • Managed 3 large-scale residential projects to completion in 2019, totaling 189 separate housing units with a market value of £26 million.
  • Saved 8% on annual costs projection in 2019.
  • Managed 10+ large-scale projects in total, with a combined value of £100+ million.
  • Saved a total sum of £12 million from projected costs in 4 years at the company.
  • Implemented new safety standards and a way-of-working model to reduce accidents by 40%.
  • Ensured conformity to building plans and permits secured—0 planning, legal or client disputes in 4 years.
Bad Example
  • Led a team of project managers through teamwork and knowledge sharing.
  • Known for delivering projects on schedule.
  • Maintained an excellent relationship with sales operations.

The good example quantifies every facet of the responsibilities and avoids making empty, not backed up statements. You can list the other things you do and are good at, but don’t want to take up half the page—in a CV skills section.

Beware:

If you’re going to include a skills section, make sure it’s worth it. Avoid the generic.

4. Make Education Your Cornerstone

Of course, a good construction project manager is proven in the field. Which does not mean your education section can’t make your construction project manager CV more rigid.

Keep the reverse-chronological model, and list degree and school names, and dates. Then, back it up with the evidence: achievements, honours and awards. If that is not possible, you may opt to list the relevant coursework.

If you have more completed developments than Stephen M. Ross, feel free to skip the extra bullet points, and just list the degree and school name.
